Philosophy and Mathematics: A memorial conference in honour of Professor John J. Cleary
Trinity College Dublin, 28th – 29th May 2010
On 12 April 2009 Ireland lost a consummate human being – a philosopher of tremendous acumen and a man of great kindness and integrity. Professor John Cleary’s influence touched the lives of colleagues and students all over the world, and not least in his home departments of NUI Maynooth and Boston College. He approached each endeavour with courage, zeal, optimism and fortitude, and all of these qualities were certainly evident as Professor Cleary faced his final days. As a scholar of ancient philosophy, Professor Cleary was interested and well versed in all aspects of the discipline from the Presocratics through to the Neoplatonists, but his two specialties were Aristotle’s theory of mathematics, and Greek education, or the paidea project. In keeping with these themes, the Dublin Centre for the Study of the Platonic Tradition in conjunction with the Trinity College Department of Philosophy is proud to organize the above conference in honour of Professor John Cleary.
Papers submitted to the conference should be suitable for a 30-minute presentation. Each presentation will be followed by a 15-minute discussion period. Papers can be on any topic relating to philosophy and mathematics. Abstracts of not more than 1000 words should be submitted no later than the 1st of April 2010, and should be emailed with no identifying characteristics to larsenp@tcd.ie. Please also send, as a separate attachment, a cover letter with your name, email address and home institution.
