Greetings SAGP members. Just “click here” to download a PDF version of the SAGP Newsletter 2008/9.2 which contains the papers for the SAGP meeting with the Central Division of the American Philosophical Association; they are to be presented February 18, 2009.
Also a reminder: February 1, 2009, is the deadline for submissions for the Society for Ancient Greek Philosophy sessions at the Eastern Division meeting of the American Philosophical Association in December 2009, and the American Philological Association meeting in January 2010.
The best way to submit a paper is as an attachment in Word (“.doc”) or Rich Text Format (“.rtf”) sent to apreus@binghamton.edu. The attachment should be prepared for blind review. In the email message to which it is attached please include your name, academic affiliation, and preferred postal address; it is also good to include the title of the paper in the cover note. Please state your preference concerning Pacific or Central as venue for presentation of your paper. Please submit only one paper for this round (there will other opportunities). Do not send your paper in PDF, because I won’t be able to edit and reformat to ensure blind review. Consequently your Greek (if any) should be transliterated in this submission. (The problem about Greek is that not all the reviewers have the same sort of Greek on their computers, so it may come out rather garbled on their screens.) If your paper is accepted you can send me a version with real Greek in it in December, because that version is going out PDF or in hard copy.
The Program Committee has requested that submissions be limited to 3000 words MAX, and suggests that submissions less than 1000 words are too short to be evaluated effectively. Accepted papers may be revised up to a max of 5000 words for distribution. (We are still distributing some copies in hard copy, and long papers get expensive both in terms of printing and in terms of postage.)
The members of the Program Committee who do blind review of the submissions are: the President, Deborah Modrak; John Anton, Elizabeth Asmis, Fred Miller, Julius Moravcsik, and Thomas M. Robinson.
We ask that those who submit papers be members of the Society for the 08/09 Academic year. If you don’t know your dues status, check with apreus@binghamton.edu.
Dues are $10 US per year. We polled the current membership about hard copy (the way we sent out the papers for many years) and PDF distribution. A large majority, but not unanimity, preferred PDF distribution, which will enable us to keep dues for people receiving papers in that form at the very affordable $10 per year. Our printing costs have gone up very dramatically, and postage has also gone up steadily, so to send out hard copy we need $20 per year. THUS when you pay your dues be sure to give me your preferred email address for receipt of newsletters via PDF file. If you want to receive the papers in hard copy you pay $20 (per year); be sure to tell me that is what you want, and be sure to tell me your preferred postal address for receipt of papers.
Make out your check to SAGP. If you prefer to pay by credit card, a payment form is included below (you can copy it). After filling it out, it can be sent as an email attachment, fax, or snailmail. Those who pay by check do not need a payment form—just mail the check and your preferred email and postal mailing address to SAGP, Philosophy, Binghamton University, Binghamton NY 13902-6000.
